Long Tall Sally Pop-Up Shops

28 Mar

This past weekend, I visited the Long Tall Sally pop-up shop in Boston. LTS has been hosting a series of pop-up shops across the United States (see the full list here), which has been AMAZING for those of us far from the only current LTS US store–located in the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. Why amazing? LTS ships in the latest spring 2011 fashions for two weekend days, and you can see, feel, and most importantly TRY ON items…most people take this for granted, but as tall women everywhere know, it is such a novelty to try on/fit into multiple pairs of pants and have to decide based on style as opposed to fit! Not surprisingly, Saturday was mobbed, and Sunday was quieter, but I walked out with two pairs of jeans—the Portobello Skinny Jeans featured in my previous post, and the Silver Natsuki Jeans that are sold out online.

The verdict? I am delighted with both pairs of jeans. The Portobellos have a wonderful high rise that sits at my actual waist, and are slim-fitting without being tight due to elastane content. The Silver Natsukis are my 2011 replacement for my Parasuco bootlegs…I love the distressed wash, wide bootcut, and how substantial and high-quality they feel on. Both would be equally arresting on a very slender tall woman, but I find both cuts particularly flattering to my curvy frame (I’m a size M-L on top, 10-14 on bottom for Long Tall Sally). I also met some lovely tall women, and the LTS staff at the pop-up were wonderful, helpful, and sweet! Great job, LTS!

Spring Wish-List

28 Mar

It’s still freezing in Boston (low 30s and windy!), but I have already settled on it being spring. I find myself daydreaming of trips to the beach; fetching fresh veggies from the farmers’ markets on my bike; having my first soft-serve ice cream cone of the season. I also can’t help thinking about the dresses, sandals, and shorts I’d wear for the beach, bicycling, and ice cream. This spring, I feel especially inspired by the classic/retro color palette and the re-emergence of girly staples (full skirted dresses, popsicle bright cardigans, clog sandals), and I even might be whimsical enough to top off my ensembles with a straw boating hat!

Spring essentials

1. I haven’t seen an eyelet dress thus far in tall sizes, but the Ralph Lauren one I chose here likely runs long. I’ve found that my favorite brands in dresses—namely, Ralph Lauren, Jones New York, and any of the Anthropologie house brands—tend to run right within knee length, even on a very vertical girl like me!

2. Ahh, another cardigan. Turquoise and white are just a natural pairing…and throw in a spot of red (Sandals? A coral necklace?) and you’ve got an outfit!

3. Much to my delight, the Jack Rogers Navajo sandals (both in flats and wedges) run up to a size 12! I’ve been scoping out the metallic gold mini-wedge for quite some time now…

4. Even on a short-waisted, long-legged girl like me, I love higher rises (as they are actually mid-rises on me)! If I can’t find a high-waist short in tall (I’m checking Topshop talls) that hits at my natural waist, I will look for a regular high-waisted short…be gone, muffin tops!

5. I normally don’t do hats, but I love straw boating hats for the weekend as a bit of a sartorial one-two-punch…so cute with a striped tee and shorts, a casual dress, or jeans and a tank top.

6. A comfortable, adorable clog sandal that I can wear on my bike OR on walks to work That ALSO runs up to a size 43? Thank you Dansko for the Sissy sandal! (This may be the top item on my spring/summer wishlist…)

Spring 2011: Profusion of Pastels

24 Mar

Up until this spring, I had been vehemently anti-pastels. I had always associated softer shades with either the preferences of the really young, the really old, or the suburban set—and duly would pick bright or bold colors over a soft color any day. However, I have commenced a not-to-be-easily-sated love affair with mint, blush pink, icy blue, and soft yellow this spring/summer season when I realized that retailers have picked up on younger customers’ “pastel prejudice” and have reimagined cuts and shapes of clothing to make these less-saturated colors look surprisingly modern.

No retailer has mastered the new 2011 pastels better than the Gap. Under the creative direction of the charming (and might I add handsome?) Patrick Robinson, the once-stale mass retailer is fresh again (with an especial focus on the 25-35 demographic). This season’s pieces hit that sweet spot that comes from balancing utility with femininity—there are oversized button-downs in satin paired with chinos; pique cotton and chiffon dresses; sequin skirts and chambray shirts. And the color palette? Watery pastels and whites. With streamlined cuts, arresting structure, and spot-on detailing, even I can’t resist eggshell—and I’ll be finding more ways to mix in my refreshing new Gap separates over the (hopefully coming-soon) warm weather months!

And because I have an abiding love for pantones, check out Pantone.com’s carefully-selected shades for spring! I think I see a lavender, a mint, a silvery grey and a blush pink…Gap was onto something!
